Planet Fitness is expanding to Centerville, hoping to open in time to capitalize on New Year’s resolutions. The fitness chain — which has an existing location in Dayton at 4892 Airway Road — has signed a 5-year lease in the Washington Park Plaza shopping center at 705 Lyons Road.Regional Manager Ty Singleton said the new 23,000-square-foot location is part of a five-year plan to open five locations throughout Dayton.“Airway has done really well, so we’re hoping within five years we’ll have five clubs,” he said.Singleton said he will probably be hiring between eight and 10 new employees, although Planet Fitness might transfer some employees from other locations outside Dayton. The Airway Road location is run by 10 employees. Singleton said he hopes to open by the first of the year.Washington Park Plaza shopping center is managed by Lamar Companies.Sam Cooper, leasing manager for the shopping center, said it is still about 50 percent vacant, which reflects the tough market for retail leasing.“We’re obviously trying to be more aggressive than the competition by offering lease incentives,” Cooper said. “It’s still a very challenging market for sure.”

Planet Fitness, which has gyms across the U.S., has roughly 20 Ohio locations.
