 As fitness centers thrive with inflated membership in the new year, at least one longtime workout space has closed its doors.Career Life Fitness Center, at the corner of Appleton and Central streets, shut down last month after 29 years in business.A message posted on the door reads, in part: “Due to serious illness and financial issues, we need to inform you that effective today, December 17, 2012, Career Life Fitness Center will be closed permanently after 29 years of commitment to the health and fitness of the Lowell area women.”The message goes on to say that members will receive a prorated return within 30 days, and was signed by “Joann Sr., Joann Jr. and Lisa.”The owner, Joann Michaud, couldn’t be reached for comment.The two-story building is listed for sale by Dick Lepine Real Estate for $159,000. It offers 3,700 square feet, with the first floor (where the fitness center was) including one bathroom and two showers and the second floor including two bathrooms and office space.The listing agent, Walter “Buddy” Flynn, said he envisions the entire building being used as office space and that he has already had interested parties.”We’ll work something out,” he said.
