Woman Who Fell Off SoulCycle Bike Files Lawsuit

A woman who claims she was “catastrophically injured” with a dislocated left ankle after she fell off a SoulCycle bike during a class in 2014 is suing the New York-based company and the instructor who led the class.

Carmen Farias filed the lawsuit May 31 in Los Angeles County Superior Court last week against SoulCycle and instructor Angela Davis, Buzzfeed and other media outlets reported.

Farias took the class in July 2014 at a SoulCycle studio in Beverly Hills, Calif., with fellow employees after her company offered them a free SoulCycle class. Farias had never taken an indoor cycling class, according to the report.

Farias claims Davis demanded the riders go faster and personally mocked her and her co-workers when they slowed down, telling them, “We don’t take breaks,” according to the report. From Buzzfeed:

“Carmen was in serious peril,” the complaint states. “With the music blaring and in the shadowy darkness, Carmen was isolated on her spinning cycle. Her feet were locked to the pedals and the pedals just kept turning. Fatigue and disorientation overcame Carmen and she fell to her right and off of the saddle of the spinning cycle.”

Farias claims negligence on the part of SoulCycle and Davis because she was not properly trained to ride the cycle and is seeking a jury trial and damages, according to the report. Farias had signed a new rider waiver form but did not bring it to the class, Buzzfeed reported.

Gabby Etrog Cohen, the senior vice president of public relations and brand strategy at SoulCycle, told Yahoo Beauty, “We don’t comment on ongoing litigation.”
