State seeks back wages from closed health club

WATERLOO, Iowa — State labor officials are going after the operator of a fitness center that closed down in November.

In court records, attorneys for the Iowa Labor Commissioner said World Wide Fitness failed to pay $9,879 to seven employees when it closed its University Avenue location in Cedar Falls.

Claims per employee range from $120 to $3,946, court records state.

The Labor Commissioner’s petition was filed July 2 in Black Hawk County District Court and names operator Jim Holmes as a defendant.

It seeks $9,879 in wages, as well as liquidated damages under Iowa law, which would effectively double the amount the workers could collect. The petition also seeks a judgment to cover court costs and attorney’s fees.

The business opened in Cedar Falls in 2008 and closed in November 2011.

Contact information for Holmes wasn’t available.
