Powerhouse Gym closes without warningA Brighton Township gym that has received an uproar from its members after closing without notice and continuing to bill is pursuing a new location but didn’t open for business when promised.

The township’s Planning Commission on Monday approved a special-land-use permit at 10489 Grand River Ave. for Powerhouse Gym, according to Township Planner Kelly Matthews.

No lease has been signed yet, said Dan Mulvihill, real estate broker for the property, and the Livingston County Building Department has no record of an interior-renovation-permit application.Powerhouse Gym closes without warning

On Jan. 18, Katie McCloskey of Brighton Township ventured to Powerhouse Gym’s former location at 5757 Whitmore Lake Road for her usual workout. She was surprised at what she found.Powerhouse Gym closes without warning

“That was the day they closed shop and started moving without any warning to any of the members,” she said.

The following day, McCloskey contacted gym staff about canceling her membership and receiving a refund. Employees informed her that the membership agreement — which she said she never received — allowed the gym to close for up to three weeks.

“Now, here we are over three weeks later, and I have not been contacted by any management, and I certainly haven’t been refunded my sign-up fee,” said McCloskey, who feels uneasy knowing the business has her credit card information.

Although the special-land-use permit for the new location was filed under the “Powerhouse Gym” name, an announcement has been posted on the facility’s Facebook page announcing the gym will reopen under a new name, Kensington Valley Fitness.

When contacted by the Daily Press & Argus, Powerhouse Gym International, the parent company for local Powerhouse gyms, stated that the gym is no longer associated with Powerhouse Gym. Corporate headquarters declined further comment.

Who will own the new gym is unclear.
