An exercise in bouncing checks: It’s never a good sign when your employer tells you not to cash your paycheck till the next day. And for employees of Portland Sport & Spa, payday is yet to come.

The RiverPlace location for Portland Sport & Spa abruptly closed this month – following last month’s closure of its sister health club in Hillsboro. And just like workers at the Hillsboro location, employees found that they are out hundreds of dollars that they had been counting on from working the previous weeks.

Members of the health club, which is owned by Allstate Financial Group of Woodinville, Washington, were finding poor service in its final weeks. Routine supplies like toilet paper and soap ran out and the club was chlorinating the pool with household bleach versus specially formulated pool chemicals.

One potential bright spot for employees – they might be able to recoup up to $4000 in unpaid wages from the state’s Wage Security Fund.
