A locked-up gym tagged with the word “bankrupt” and the owner’s cellphone number greeted Katelynn Feeney of London as she peered into the emptied Oxygen Women’s Fitness and Day spa on Wellington Rd. north of Base Line Rd. Sunday.
Feeney, 21, signed up with the club only two days earlier and paid more than $1,000 for membership and private fitness sessions.
“It kinda sucks,” she said. “I was taken aback, no phone call, and two others (friends) signed up to come with me.”
The gym’s owner, Sylvia Sharpley, said Sunday the issue is a misunderstanding about terms of a lease.
She insisted the gym will re-open Monday at 9 a.m. and planned to be there to greet members and to explain the situation.
But Katelynn’s father, John Feeney, wasn’t impressed. His daughter had paid $365 for the year, plus $880 for 14 private fitness sessions, “She saved her money, and now she’s broke, such a waste of money, right there,” he said, motioning to the closed gym, “It’s just mean.”
A customer said rumours started to go through the gym Thursday that it would be closing because of its association with the cash-strapped Premier Fitness chain.
Sharpley, who bought the place a month ago, said she is not directly connected to Premier Fitness, which formerly occupied that space; however, she did say the owner of Premier Fitness is also a part-owner of Oxygen.
She said she invested $20,000 in new electronics and fitness machines.
On Friday night, Oxygen closed early and the newly installed flat screen TVs, and other high-priced gear was moved out, leaving beer bottles and an empty pizza box.
