National Fitness Center abrupty closed its doors

Would-be patrons at Clarksville’s National Fitness Center were surprised to learn this week that the location had abrupty closed its doors.

Leaf-Chronicle news partner WSMV Channel 4 reports that rather than a phone call or an email, members discovered the closure by a sign on the door saying the gym was permanently closed as of Tuesday. The doors were locked, and the sign said the gym was closing because of a lease dispute.

The Better Business Bureau has received 38 complaints for the Clarksville facility in the last three years, WSMV reported, primarily for problems with its services and billing issues.

National Fitness also has several sites in Knoxville and Chattanooga, and they, too, have been plagued with problems. Although it’s not accredited, the Better Business Bureau rated it with an “F.”

Officials from the Clarksville Athletic Club told WSMV the owner of National Fitness contacted them on Wednesday asking if they wanted to purchase the facility’s equipment.

Clients of National Fitness have said they can’t get any answers from the company, including whether or not their prepaid dues will be refunded. According to the sign on the door, if those dues were drafted from a client’s bank account every month, that has been suspended. However, there is no mention of refunds for dues paid in advance.

Representatives from National Fitness’s corporate office have yet to offer comment.
