Man sentenced to life in prison for Planet Fitness killing– A man who pled guilty to murder and aggravated assault charges in a shooting outside a local Planet Fitness club was sentenced to life in prison Thursday afternoon.

Yu Masaki admitted to gunning down and killing 31-year-old Juan Escamilla and critically injuring 25-year-old Maggie McCombs in the gym parking lot at Loop 410 and McCullough in January 2012.

Escamilla was walking with McCombs outside the gym when there were ambushed by Masaki.

Escamilla died as a result of his injuries.  The shooting left McCombs, 21-years-old at the time, a quadriplegic.

Shortly after the shooting, police said Masaki was a member of the gym and had a crush on McCombs.

“The suspect was a wanna-be boyfriend who the woman was not interested in,” SAPD Chief William McManus said.

During the trial, a forensic psychiatrists who evaluated Masaki said he suffered from depression and and autistic disorder.

Masaki faces deportation since he is a citizen of Japan.
