Gold’s Gym to close location Friday

“We had no intention of raising the rent, we just wanted to get paid our rent,” Kellam said.

Gold’s Gym announced this week that it will close its Lancaster location at 9 p.m. Friday after it couldn’t renew its lease for the property.

The gym opened in 2008 at 2301 Harrisburg Pike, taking 28,000 square-feet of space in what had previously been Workouts fitness center.

In a Sept. 5 letter to members, gym management said that with its 10-year lease expiring this year, it spent more than a year trying to negotiate new terms, but was unable to secure a renewal.

“We had no intention of raising the rent, we just wanted to get paid our rent,” Kellam said.

Membership fees will be refunded or memberships transferred to another location, according to the letter from Carol Deluliis, senior vice president of operations for Gold’s Gym locations in central and eastern Pennsylvania owned by franchisee Kurt Krieger.

The letter blamed property owners Don Anderson and Mike Kellam for the closure, saying a new lease agreement was not considered, forcing the gym to close.

Reached Thursday, Anderson and Kellam said they didn’t renew the lease because the gym owes them more than $200,000, including five months of back rent as well as money for their share of the utilities.
