Genesis Health Clubs Expanding…65,000-square-foot health club

Genesis Health Clubs is expanding its Kansas operations, this time in Manhattan.

The Wichita-based club has purchased the two Max Fitness locations in Manhattan, giving Genesis 20 clubs across Kansas and in Missouri.

Genesis plans to build a ground-up facility near Allison Avenue and Fort Riley Blvd. in Manhattan. The 65,000-square-foot health club will include indoor tennis courts, indoor pools, a basketball court and a track.

Construction will start later this year.

Owner Rodney Steven II says he has been considering Manhattan as an expansion market for some time but was unable to find the right land to build on.

Genesis plans to close one of the Max Fitness locations in Manhattan once the new facility opens.

Genesis has five Wichita locations and has been growing its presence statewide by acquiring existing health and fitness facilities in smaller cities.

Last year, the company purchased Maximus Fitness in Topeka. That followed the 2012 purchase of Maximus locations in Lawrence and Leavenworth.

Last May, Genesis purchased the Ozark Fitness Centers in Springfield, Mo. That marked the second move for Genesis into Missouri. Genesis also operates a club in St. Joseph, Mo.

Genesis’ other Kansas locations are in Hutchinson, Salina, Emporia and McPherson.
