Fire damages 24-Hour Fitness club

City building inspectors will determine if the 24-Hour Fitness club on Teller Street in Corona, which was damaged by fire and water Tuesday afternoon, can reopen or will have to close for repairs.

The fire, reported at 1:30 p.m., started on an exterior wall, burned into the wall and up to the roof of the club in the 200 block of Teller Street, said Lynn Mata, spokeswoman for the Corona Fire Department.

Fire damage was contained to the building’s exterior, but water used to fight the fire damaged the club’s interior, Mata said by telephone.

“They had to tear down a corner of the structure’s exterior to make access to the fire,” she said.

About 100 people were inside the club when the fire broke out and the building was evacuated, she said. No one was injured and the fire was declared out as of 3:11 p.m.

The cause was not immediately determined.
