Anytime Fitness, the Minnesota-based 24-hour gym, will soon become the first around-the-clock fitness center in downtown Detroit, joining a number of name-brand businesses
moving to the city.
The gym will open on New Year’s Day in 5,000 square feet on the first floor of the Security Trust Lofts at Griswold and Lafayette. It’s operated as a franchisee by the Roseville-based Ferlito Group, a development company that is also in charge of the building’s construction.
“We saw a gap in the market,” said Mike Ferlito, project manager for the building’s construction. “We felt this was the perfect location, especially in the central business
district where people are looking for quick and easy access to a high-end gym they could go to.”
The fitness center would be the first large-scale 24-hour gym downtown. None of the others downtown, the Boll Family YMCA on Broadway, RenCen Fitness at the Renaissance Center, and the Detroit Athletic Club are open 24 hours.
The Ferlito Group also has purchasing rights for additional locations in downtown and Midtown, but Ferlito said there were no plans for another gym.
“We’re very bullish on downtown,” Ferlito said.
James Bieri, who provides real estate services for retailers at Stokas Bieri Real Estate in Detroit, said the gym’s opening will be a “good option” for folks living or working downtown.
It joins the growing trend of other national companies moving into the city. Pot Belly will open soon in Campus Martius; 7-Eleven has plans for multiple locations downtown, and Whole Foods and Meijer both opened in Detroit this summer.
“I think the uniquely special tenants people want to have are great in a city, but you need to have a blend of national tenants,” he said. “They provide credit
