A defunct Cardinal Fitness is accused of putting its former members at risk for identity theft and now the Indiana Attorney General’s Office is getting involved.

The investigation came just days after Fox59 first learn about sensitive documents which were found in a dumpster outside the closed facility on the city’s south side.

The documents included receipts containing personal information and full credit card numbers.

Chuck Taylor said the Attorney General’s Office has seized a box of documents from the dumpster.

“We have no idea at this point how many other people have seen these documents. We’re in the process of inventorying them right now so we can at least start a list of possible contact by Cardinal Fitness,” said Taylor.

Cardinal Fitness has not responded to requests for comment.

By law, owners must completely destroy or erase all documents so that they’re no longer legible. If Cardinal Fitness is to be found at fault, they could face serious fines.

At this point, the Attorney General’s Office hasn’t found any evidence that the information discovered has been misused. They are urging people to monitor credit reports and credit card statements just in case.
