Athletic clubs to close in 2014 if a buyer is not found
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – After decades of running health clubs, Mercy Health Saint Mary’s is looking to sell East Hills Athletic Club, Michigan Athletic Club and Orchard Hills Sports and Swim Club.
The clubs will be closed in early 2014 if they are not sold, hospital officials said.
“This was a decision based on the significant financial challenges the clubs have faced in the past several years,” Saint Mary’s said in a statement. “Saint Mary’s does not own the land or the buildings housing the clubs, but only the equipment and the memberships; we are seeking buyers for those assets.”
Saint Mary became owner of the MAC when it was built in 1985. It purchased East Hills and Orchard Hills in 1999.
The hospital said it has been trying to find a buyer for the clubs for several months. If the clubs are closed, Saint Mary’s said it would help employees to make the transition to other job opportunities, if available.
