Athletic club owner admits bogus insurance claims

Athletic club owner admits bogus insurance claims.

The owner of a health club in Springville has admitted submitting false claims to health insurance companies.

Between January 2009 and December 2012, 50-year-old Gary Wannamacher submitted false claims to health care companies from Spring Creek Athletic Club. Prosecutors say he was reimbursed for health programs at the club that were not attended by the beneficiaries.

For example, Wannamacher submitted claims for members who were a part of the Silver Sneakers program, even though some members were out-of-town on the date the session was held and another had major surgery and did not attend. Two of the people Wannamacher submitted claims for were deceased, according to prosecutors.

Wannamacher pleaded guilty to health care fraud. He will be sentenced in September and faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both.
