A man who went on a rampage at a gym on Spokane’s South Hill is brain dead but on life support.

The suspect has not been named but was known to law enforcement. Police tased him twice outside of Oz Fitness Thursday afternoon. Police shut down a stretch of Regal for hours while they investigated throughout the night.

Authorities said the man went on a similar rampage on Tuesday at a jiu jitsu business.

KREM 2 News’ weekend sports anchor Bryan Fenley was at Oz Fitness on Thursday and witnessed the episode.

“I was on the elliptical when I noticed a man clapping uncontrollably,” Fenley said. “About 35 people staring at him for a minute, nonstop, and he was yelling things. I couldn’t understand what he was saying.

Fenley said the man calmed down briefly but flew into a violent rage minutes later.

“And he just punches the wall and then yelling stuff uncontrollably. Grabs a towel dispenser, throws it on the floor,” Fenley added. “They had people working in the gym, people there to work out trying to calm this guy down. A couple people there were trying to figure out why he was overreacting emotionally. The people he got near he’d talk to and you’d kinda feel threatened.”

According to Fenley, the ordeal ended when two men overcame the man’s strength and got him out of the gym.

“The two guys somehow got him out,” Fenley said. “I don’t know how they did it.”
