LA Fitness to close downtown location

LA Fitness to close downtown Lexington locationThe doors will close for good Friday at the LA Fitness location perched atop a parking garage in the middle of downtown Lexington.

Workers at the health club at 230 West Street told WKYT the location would end operations at 2 p.m. Friday. The downtown location was one of three LA Fitness facilities in Lexington.

In 2012, LA Fitness acquired the locations when it bought Lexington-based fitness chain Urban Active.

Its founder Royce Pulliam started Urban Active in 2007 when he switched his former Gold’s Gym locations in Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio to Urban Active.

Various concept drawings and sketches for the long-delayed CentrePointe project in downtown showed the former Urban Active and then LA Fitness as part of the project. Plans submitted to the Courthouse Area Design Review Board in 2012 showed a two-level Urban Active health club that was approximately 30,000 square feet.

One has to wonder how long the remaining LA Fitness facilities will remain open. They are the ONLY businesses that I know of that if a customer has a problem with the way a specific facility is managed, there is NO CONTACT INFORMATION whatsoever to reach their corporate office — if you don’t like a manager or the way he is doing things, too bad. Newly opened gyms are rapidly pulling away members because of better rates, they are cleaner, and their hours are better. The manager of the one I go to has the personality of a cold toilet seat. How to reach corporate-level customer service Kroger, Dell, GM, etc? Easy. How to do it at LA Fitness? Impossible. As with others, I’m gone when my annual membership ends
