Fitness Wars: LA Fitness plans new location only one block from Planet Fitness.
LA Fitness is up and running at the former Bally Total Fitness location at mixed-use development Perkins Rowe on its first official day in operation.
While workers give potential members tours of the 31,000-square-foot facility Tuesday, the corporation is settling plans to build a second Baton Rouge facility on Siegen Lane, about a block down from a new Planet Fitness in the Siegen Village Shopping Center, which is slated to open this week.
In April, LA Fitness purchased two tracts of land totaling about 8 acres off of Siegen Lane from Siegen Retail LLC for approximately $1.3 million.
The 38,000-square-foot fitness club will be located at 6474 Siegen Lane near Academy Sports, and will include an approximately 3,600-square-foot mezzanine as well as an indoor pool, basketball courts and sauna.
Bally’s closed its doors on April 29. According to local reports, the company said it was unable to negotiate a new lease agreement with the property owners.
Members of the national fitness chain who had memberships originating in the Baton Rouge area were issued refund checks for the remaining portion of their prepaid memberships.
LA Fitness does not currently have any other locations open in Louisiana, however the company is considered the fastest-growing gym in the country. It currently has more than 630 locations in the U.S. and Canada. LA Fitness didn’t share any details about other potential Louisiana locations.
