The mementos are gone, but the new owners of Omni Fitness hope the membership will return and grow.

Angela and Tony Di Fiore, who own the Car Parts Warehouse chain, bought Middleburg Heights’ popular Omni at auction on Aug. 22 for an undisclosed sum, outdoing some 100 other bidders. After nine days’ shutdown, the club at 6600 W. 130th St. is scheduled to reopen Monday at its usual starting time: 3 a.m.

Said Angela Di Fiore, “It’s a beautiful place. It’s an amazing opportunity. It’s a legend in the area.”

Said Tony, “We’re going to pump some new blood into it.”

The spouses plan to redecorate, offer wireless connections, open an outdoor soccer field, keep updating their trove of equipment and replace some of the sports memorabilia that used to crowd the club’s walls. They vow to keep opening at 3 a.m. 365 days a year. They may change the name from Omni Fitness Club to Omni Fitness Center.

The old owner, Ron Trzcinski, did not return calls for comment. He also owns the Original Mattress Factory.

Fitness centers often come and go, but Omni has endured for about 28 years. Anthony Jackman of Parma, a member from the start who finished this year’s Boston Marathon ahead of the bombings there, said, “It was more than a gym. There was an awful lot there, from the indoor track to all the cardio machines to the pool to the sauna to the steam room. You had a lot of friends there from a lot of different generations. That made it a lot of fun.”

The three-story club also offers basketball, racquetball, spinning, child care and more. It abuts Big Creek Reservation, and members often hike and bike there as part of their workouts.

Mayor Gary W. Starr welcomed the news of the club’s rebirth. “We remain proud and grateful for the increased business growth in Middleburg Heights.  The recent news of the purchase of the Omni Fitness Club and their new owners’ choice to stay here in Middleburg Heights is yet another positive development for our city.”

The club has had about 30,000 members over the years. The Di Fiores plan to admit current members for free the first couple of days before selling renewals and new memberships. Non-members may attend for the usual price of $10 per visit.

As before, closing time will be 10 p.m. on weekdays, 5 p.m. on Saturdays, 9 p.m. on Sundays, and at noon on holidays.

The Di Fiores said they’re keeping many old employees but hiring new ones, too. For information, call 440-886-4545 or go online at omnifitness.net.
