Shooter pleads guilty to fatal Planet Fitness spree
An alleged stalker who went on a shooting rampage outside a North Side Planet Fitness last year, critically injuring the woman he appeared to be obsessed with and killing an employee who was walking her to her car, pleaded guilty Monday to murder and aggravated assault.
Yu Masaki, 28, had no agreement in place as he entered the pleas, meaning prosecutors will be able to ask state District Judge Angus McGinty for up to life in prison during his sentencing hearing in June.
The punishment delay is because the defense is waiting for documents from Columbia and Japan, where Masaki was born and grew up before becoming a United States resident eight years ago, according to defense attorney Jim Wheat.
Masaki was arrested in January 2012, after shooting victim Margaret “Maggie” McCombs, 22, was able to tell a Planet Fitness employee, “It was Yu,” before passing out. A month later, although unable to speak because of a tracheal tube still in her throat, McCombs was able to mouth to detectives that Masaki was the shooter. Masaki was arrested soon after the shooting, following a struggle with police outside his home in which he was alleged to have reached for a gun in his waistband.
“I was shooting,” he confirmed in a police interview, according to court documents that were made public after Monday’s plea. “I hate her. She broke my heart.”
Masaki told detectives that he bought a gun in October 2011 with the intention of shooting her. While he didn’t know Juan Carlos “J.C.” Escamilla, Masaki said he shot him because he was with McCombs.
After shooting both victims, Masaki said he loaded another magazine of bullets and walked back to his car. Encountering Escamilla on the ground, he shot the stranger again then drove to a nearby restaurant to have a meal, he said.
Escamilla died at the scene from gunshot wounds to his chest and face, according to an autopsy report.
Masaki had been barred from the gym because of “extremely aggressive advances” toward women there, police said at the time of his arrest. He had previously shown up at McCombs’ door and gave her jewelry, but she rebuffed his advances, McCombs’ father said.
Among the evidence collected by police and prosecutors was an email to the gym in which McCombs detailed the disturbing behavior.ABC Billing Company Breaking News Story , AMERI SHAPE Breaking News Story , amerishape Breaking News Story , anytime fitness Breaking News Story , ASF Billing Company Breaking News Story , asf international Breaking News Story , butterfly life Breaking News Story , contours express Breaking News Story , curves for women Breaking News Story , enroll members Breaking News Story , fitness Breaking News Story ,fitness center Breaking News Story , fitness life marketing Breaking News Story , fitness marketing Breaking News Story , fitness promotions Breaking News Story , golds gym Breaking News Story , world gym Breaking News Story , gym Breaking News Story , Gym Marketing Breaking News Story , Gym promotions Breaking News Story , health Breaking News Story , health club Breaking News Story , health club for sale Breaking News Story , Health Club Marketing Breaking News Story , Health Club Promotion Breaking News Story , fitness Consultants Breaking News Story , health club promotions Breaking News Story , Health Clubs Breaking News Story , join health club Breaking News Story , Ladies Fitness Breaking News Story , Ladies Workout Express Breaking News Story , lady of america Breaking News Story , NAC Billing Company Breaking News Story , Peak Performance Breaking News Story , planet fitness Breaking News Story , Powerful Promotions Breaking News Story , powerhouse gym Breaking News Story , Professional Fitness Marketing Breaking News Story , Raise EFT $6 Breaking News Story , Slim and tone Breaking News Story , snap fitness Breaking News Story , spa studio owners Breaking News Story , Targeted fitness Breaking News Story , marketing that generates new fitness Breaking News Story , Thousands of health clubs Breaking News Story , world health club Breaking News Story , workout express Breaking News Story , join Breaking News Story ,health club closed Breaking News Story , health club opening Breaking News Story ,club solutions magazine Breaking News Story , s Breaking News Story ,24 Hour Fitness Breaking News Story ,Anytime fitness Breaking News Story , Bally Total Fitness Breaking News Story ,Health Club Management Breaking News Story ,Crunch Fitness Breaking News Story ,Club One Breaking News Story ,Curves Breaking News Story ,Equinox Breaking News Story ,Health Fitness Corp. “I’m not sure how he knows where I live. The only thing I can think is that he followed me one day on my way home from the gym,” she wrote. “I know you’ve spoken to him recently and since then he hasn’t bothered me, so hopefully that fixed things.”
Outside the courtroom, attorney Pablo Escamilla said he hopes to see Masaki receive the maximum punishment for his son’s murder. While life without parole would be preferable, he realizes that isn’t possible, the former Edgewood school district trustee said.
“I’m glad this portion of the trial is over because it would have been a very difficult thing for the family,” he said. “My son, he was a beautiful boy. He was always very helpful, very loving, always smiling and very happy.”
