Planet Fitness coming to Waynesboro

The owners say they hope to have the fitness center up and running by December. Hours of operation starting at 5 a.m. on Monday are 24 hours a day until 10 p.m. Friday. The facility will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Brad Driver of Bridgewater is one of four members of an investment group who already own the Planet Fitness Harrisonburg location and three North Carolina locations. The other partnership members include Stacey Jennings of Bridgewater, Eric Smith of New Bern, N.C. and Jamie Mason of Knoxville, Tenn.

Driver said the group will transform the former grocery with exterior and interior renovation, using 23,000 square feet of the 33,000 square feet for Planet Fitness. More than 100 pieces of cardio equipment will be in the building, Driver said.

A complete remodeling is planned for the Westwood Shopping Center that will involve refacing the center, adding a new stucco facade, crown molding and new awnings. Improvements to the parking area are planned as well.

The remaining 10,000 square feet of the former grocery will be used for an additional tenant or tenants, Driver said.

He and his partners have been looking at the area for some time, he explained.

“When we bought into the Harrisonburg market, we felt Augusta County was ripe for a Planet Fitness,” he said.

The combination of the Westwood Village Shopping Center’s availability and Waynesboro’s burgeoning retail offerings made the purchase attractive, he added.  Driver said he and his partners had considered constructing a completely new building in the area, but went the renovation route when the shopping center property became available.

Membership fees at Planet Fitness will start at $10 a month, with no commitment. Unlimited fitness training is included with all memberships and is conducted in small groups of no more than five people. Planet Fitness also offers a PF Black Card membership, which costs $19.99 a month and includes unlimited tanning.

A pre-sale event will be held inside a vacant storefront in the shopping center a few doors down from the Planet Fitness location. Customers may sign up for membership in late October or early November.

“We are thrilled to be bringing the hottest and most exciting name in fitness to Waynesboro,” Driver said.
