Cammilleri died Sept. 10 at the age of 83. A private viewing and burial were held Monday in California. A memorial in Cammilleri’s honor will be held Oct. 15 at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, Calif., according to her obituary.

Cammilleri acquired World Gym International in 2009 from Planet Fitness, Newington, N.H., which had bought World Gym in 2006. The Planet Fitness-World Gym merger soon soured, leaving Cammilleri and her family to build back the trust of World Gym franchisees once they took over the company.

In an email, Guy Cammilleri, one of Joyce’s sons and the managing director of World Gym International, wrote that he and his twin brothers, Marcus and Leo, now own their mother’s shares in the company and “plan to continue to grow and nurture the company as Joyce had intended.” World Gym has more than 220 gyms in almost 20 countries.

In 1974, Joyce Cammilleri founded JOICO Laboratories, a salon hair care company she ran until she sold the company in 2001 to become an investor and philanthropist.

The family said in lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Joyce J. Cammilleri Family Fund at the California Community Foundation “so that we can continue donating to the great causes in which Joyce was involved during her lifetime.” In an email, Guy Cammilleri, one of Joyce’s sons and the managing director of World Gym International, wrote that he and his twin brothers, Marcus and Leo, now own their mother’s shares in the company and “plan to continue to grow and nurture the company as Joyce had intended.” World Gym has more than 220 gyms in almost 20 countries.
