Powerhouse Gym shuts down without notice

Members of a St. Louis County gym say they’re hundreds of dollars in the hole after the Powerhouse Gym in Shrewsbury suddenly closed its doors for good Tuesday night.

Just before locking its doors, members at Powerhouse Gym say around 9 last night, they were told to leave in the middle of their workout.

Powerhouse is a 24-hour fitness center that’s been open for the last 20 years.

More than 2,200 regular members call Powerhouse a second home. However, on Tuesday, some of them were shocked to find the doors locked and the lights of.

Unlike other workout facilities that deduct a monthly fee, a former employee says most customers here pay up front.

For some, this shut down means a loss of at least $250.

“No emails, no calls, and I actually just renewed my membership two weeks ago,” said Powerhouse Gym member Mike Donneley.

A former employee tells us there were other problems in the last few months including a leaky roof and even mold.

NewsChannel 5 reached out to one of the owners of the gym for comment and have not heard back.
