Gold’s Gym in downtown Winston-Salem closes

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem is down to just one Gold’s Gym, as the company’s popular downtown location closed Wednesday for reasons that were not disclosed, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

The gym at 400 W. Fourth St. was owned by the Gold’s Gym corporation. It opened under a different name and owner in fall 2008. The gym was on the main floor of a building being converted into 21 luxury condominiums that will be known as Twin City Lofts. GEMCAP LLC, based in the Triad, bought the building for $2.95 million in November.

John Martin, the managing partner of GEMCAP, could not be reached for immediate comment. At the time of the purchase announcement, the developers said the gym would remain and a deal worked out to provide special membership rates to people who live in the building.

Gold’s Gym said in a statement that all downtown memberships will be transferred to its fitness center at 420 Jonestown Road and that all terms of existing agreements will be honored. The Jonestown Road site opened in spring 2010 and is also corporate-owned.
